4th entry: Damon Winter



Damon Winter is a very well recognized photographer which projected his journalistic work to a worldwide extent. He was born in New York (1974) and studied environmental science in the university of Columbia. Damon is considered a prominent figure in the world of photography as he was nominated and won several prizes, the most distinguished one being the pulitzer price in 2009. Though he was one of the finalists in 2005, the fame he got definitely served as a trampoline for his career when the New York Times gave him a job back in 2007. 

Damon specializes in documentary photography, photojournalism, portraits, travels and editorials. When I saw his work in world press photo I was very impressed and decided to investigate more about him. 

This well-known photographer covered Obama’s presidential campaign, however he did it in an informative yet artistic way, always considering the aesthetics. Damon wanted to transmit not only what he saw but how he felt. When you see the pictures you feel a sensation of traveling to the past and being there, feeling the joy and excitement of American citizens for having a new, renewed and ethical president.

The Falling Man

9.11.01 "the falling man" by Richard Drew On the terrible and disastrous day the world trade center towers fell, Richard Drew was able to capture a still moment. Putting behind the catastrophe that had just happened, he took a simple yet complex photo. A man seconds before his death, free falling into fatality and in complete control of his mind. The picture went viral, it was all over the newspapers and magazines, besides the picture of the explosion the media showed this image, the falling man. Drew knew this was an artistic masterpiece with so much more meaning behind it, yet he could not believe how perfect the shot ended. Funny story, Richard Drew did not know about the picture until later, when he saw the photo sequence.
