THE ART OF OBSERVATION

(IT'S) ALL ABOUT LENSES

There's no need to say that when when talking about photography, the lens plays a significant role, if not the most important one. In fact, it is worthy buying better lenses and a cheaper camera. "Which lens should I buy?" you may be asking, and that's a really good question. There's a lot of different ones and you may need one or another depending on what your photographic interests are.

Different types of lenses

But, before spending money buying a new tool, you should try and learn how to use the one that comes by default.
This is usually the 18-55mm, and despite many people (including photographers) say that it's useless, that is not the case. It may not be the ideal or better lens out there, but if it was and still is created and sold, it definitely has a reason.

18-55mm lens

The problem with this lens is that it is not meant to do close-ups or portraits from a short distance. You definitely can use it to photograph people, but details such as a blurry background can't be obtained.

Supposedly, the best use for this lens is capturing landscapes, due to the glass' opening, but in the end, if the ISO, the lighting and the angle are adjusted properly, it can be a good option for any kind of photography, unless if a big zoom is needed.

Indeed, I guess it all depends on the way you look at things, and how you take advantage of the conditions in which the photo is being taken.

So yes, you can use your 18-55mm and take amazing pictures. It does only depend on practice and effort (just like almost any other thing).
I am leaving here some examples of different types of photography, all of them taken with the default lens.
